Coaching, and the occasional but kindly request to the umpire to re-evaluate a call, is how I remember him too. My most favorite memory happened during a baseball game at Schell park. I was in the batting circle and Jack’s Dad was talking to me about the pitcher. I remember him saying, “this guy is perfect for you to hit one out of here” and he said it in a way that filled me with such confidence that I had no other thought in my mind other than to “swing for the fences!” My turn came up to bat and the first pitch was hurled about two feet over my head. Patience wasn’t going to be a part of this at-bat. As the ball crossed the plate I found myself wildly swinging at the sky, somehow connecting perfectly with the ball. I took off for the bases, rounded second and could see that the left fielder was still a ways from the ball. By the time I hit third I was running with my head down because I knew as soon as soon as I looked up, your dad was going to be there with that great big smile of his ready and that “I told you so” look. Just before home plate, I did look up and we both burst into laughter.
