Obituary for Suzanne "Suzie" Gibson Hamm

Suzanne “Suzie” Gibson Hamm peacefully joined the Lord in Heaven on August 2, 2022. Born to Basil and Una Gibson in Bonham, Texas on January 24, 1937, she enjoyed her childhood years in Gonzales, Texas, before moving with her family to Winnsboro in 1949, where she met her sweetheart of more than 72 years, Hardy Hamm. They were married on November 30, 1956.

Suzie spent her entire life serving her family, church, and community. In 1957, she served as secretary to the first Winnsboro Chamber of Commerce, and she began a journey of youth and church work around the same time.

A lifelong Methodist, she and Hardy served on the Young Adult Council of the Texas Conference of the Methodist Church from 1965-68. For more than three decades, while raising their children, she worked with and led Jr. High and High School youth groups in Winnsboro, Mt. Pleasant, and Mineola.

In 1974, she and Hardy had an opportunity to buy a business in Winnsboro and moved their family back home from Mineola. Her three children graduated from WHS and all live in East Texas with their families.

Suzie served as the program director of the First United Methodist Church in Winnsboro, assisting with youth and other activities, and as a Cub Scout Den Mother for both of her sons and their friends. She held leadership roles with practically every committee at the church over the years, including the United Methodist Women.

A major part of her life, Suzie poured her soul into teaching an adult Sunday school class for many years, which gave her much joy and pleasure.

Suzie participated in the Support Our Schools organization that was, at the time, instrumental in the passage of the bond election for the building of Winnsboro Elementary. She served as board chair for the Main Street organization when Winnsboro attained Main Street recognition from the state. Over the years, she and Hardy were called on to serve or assist with projects of growth and development within the city, which they always eagerly accepted.

In 2007, Suzie was named Woman of the Year by the Winnsboro Chamber of Commerce, and she was honored as a Distinguished Alumni of Winnsboro High School in 2013.

Suzie was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Basil Gibson and Una Myers Gibson, and her sister, Jane Gibson Johnson. She is survived by her husband, Hardy Carl Hamm, Jr. of Winnsboro and her brother, Charles Basil Gibson, Jr., of Murchison. She was blessed with three children, who in turn blessed them with in-laws, nine grandchildren, two grandchildren-in-law, and five great-grandchildren. These include her daughter, JaneAnne Hamm Newton and her husband J.A., of Winnsboro; Carl Gibson Hamm and his wife Marcelyn, of Tyler; and Jeff Hamm of Lindale.
