Obituary for Kathleen Garrison (Cushion)

Kathleen "Kathy" Garrison, age 78 of Winnsboro, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023 in Tyler, Texas.

Kathy was born on December 30, 1944 in Freeport, Texas, to the late Kenneth Edward Cushion Sr. and Blanche Brannen Cushion. Kathy grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast and has loved the beach and fresh seafood all of her life. She graduated from Brazosport High School in 1963. Kathy attended college at the University of Houston where she graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in 1967 and started her career as a Home Economics teacher. Kathy married Paul Garrison, of Winnsboro, Texas, on December 20, 1969, at her home church in Freeport, St. Paul Episcopal Church. In 1977, they welcomed their only son to their family, Kyle Garrison. Kathy lived and taught school in Pasadena before moving to Winnsboro in 1979.

Kathy taught and inspired hundreds of students in her Home Economics kitchens and sewing classrooms over her 33 year career. Many former students have commented that she was one of their favorite teachers and that she motivated them to work hard and achieve great things. In 2000, she retired so she could spend more time gardening, traveling, and cooking. She loved growing her own vegetables and is known for the hundreds of caladiums that filled her yard each summer. Most of all, she loved great food. She enjoyed trying new things as she traveled and trying new recipes at home. She has shown her love to others for decades with homemade bread, preserves, and meals. Kathy was a wonderful example of southern hospitality and she will be missed by many. Kathy has been very active in her church over the past few years, St. Francis Episcopal Church in Winnsboro. She has served in many roles and was very proud of the small but mighty congregation and the many ways they served in the community.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ken Cushion, her husband, Paul Garrison, and her son, Kyle Garrison.

She is survived by her niece Kelly Cushion Hendricks, and her nephews Rob Cushion and Ken Cushion, and their families.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to her beloved church, St. Francis Episcopal Church, PO Box 1082, Winnsboro, Texas, 75494.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at Beaty Funeral Home 816 W. Broadway Winnsboro, TX, with Father Gary Hill conducting.
