Obituary for Alberto Roberto "Bert" Dela Cruz MD

Dr. Alberto Roberto Dela Cruz, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2022 at his home in Winnsboro. He was 78 years old.

Best known as Bert, he was born February 10, 1944 in Orani, Bataan, Philippines to Andres and Rosario Dela Cruz. He had seven brothers and sisters.

Bert followed in the footsteps of his brother and hero Eduardo and studied to be a doctor. He met Rowena in medical school where they became sweethearts and eventually married.

The couple immigrated from the Philippines to the United States in search of a better future for their family. Once in the U.S. Bert and Rowena had four children.

The family moved to Winnsboro, Texas in the 1980's, where Bert and Rowena opened up their medical practice. Their practice, as well as their family, grew and thrived. He retired after nearly 40 years of service to Winnsboro as a surgeon.

In his years of practice, Bert helped to found the Northeast Texas Child Advocacy Center, which remains open today. He was also a member of the Winnsboro Rotary Club and the North Texas Association of Philippine Physicians.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Rowena Garay Dela Cruz of Winnsboro; sons, Jesse Dela Cruz of Dallas, Albert B.J. Dela Cruz and wife Kris of the Philippines, Robert Dela Cruz and wife Irene of California; daughter, Sheila Dela Cruz and husband, A.J. Lagoe of Minnesota; two grandchildren, Olivia Dela Cruz and Gabriel Lagoe.


Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at Beaty Funeral Home 816 W. Broadway Winnsboro, TX 75494 at 10:00 am, Father Mani Mathai conducting.
