Obituary for Thomas Ray Hathaway

Thomas Ray Hathaway
Thomas Ray Hathaway, affectionately known as TR Hathaway or Doc, graced this world until May 13th of 2018 when he passed at the age of 70 years young. He unexpectedly died in his home in Winnsboro, TX. He was born to Donald and Helen Hathaway, February 14th in Beach North Dakota. He grew up on the farm in North Dakota and became interested in the field of Veterinary Medicine while in elementary school because of the local veterinarian. During high school, he applied to Kansas State University Vet School in Manhattan, Kansas, with the intention to return to North Dakota to practice.
He met his wife, Maren Longren, in1970 and they were married in June of 1970 in Topeka Kansas. Their first child, Marc was born in 1971. In 1972, TR graduated with a degree in Veterinary medicine with special emphasis on gastroenterology and small animals. The family moved to a south Chicago suburb where TR practiced in a small animal hospital for 2 years. Their second son, Brock, was born in 1975 and in 1977 they returned to Kansas where TR obtained a Masters in Surgery & Internal Medicine with emphasis in gastroenterology as well as Statistics from Kansas State University. In 1980, after getting his Master’s degree, he went to work for Mobay, a subsidiary of Bayer Industry, in Stanley, Kansas, where he did work in the field of Toxicology. In 1984 he became Board Certified in Toxicology and in 1986, he began work for the state of California as a Staff Toxicologist in the Department of Pesticides and The Department of Toxic Substances Control divisions where he worked until his retirement in 2009.
TR always had a love of horses and sports. He enjoyed singing in the choir at church and sang at his son, Brock’s, wedding. He had a love for Cowboy poetry and was always willing to share a verse when prompted. His sense of humor will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Maren, two sons, Marc and Brock (and his wife Sara) and two grandsons, Fletcher and Christian. He has multiple relatives in North Dakota as well as throughout the world. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard and his parents Donald and Helen Hathaway.
There will be two memorial services at a later date.
