Lavonia Harris Grant was born December 15, 1917, in a small community outside of Lindale, Texas, to Nathan Harris and Ida Love Harris. She was the fourth of seven children. Her parents and her six siblings proceeded her in death. On October 6, 2017, the Lord called her home to be with her loved ones.
She attended school in Wood County where she developed her great love for reading. She often talked about the kindness shown to her at school by fellow classmates, and especially by classmate Ruby Bell.
She became a Christian at an early age and as a child attended Friendship Methodist Church in Lindale, Texas. Serving the Lord was always important to her, and wherever she lived she always attended church services. In Dallas she was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church for many years. In Mineola she was a member of East Chapel C.M.E. Church and St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. At St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, she served as a Deaconess.
Lavonia was married to Harding R. Grant for 62 years. They were a perfect match, he was a home body and she loved to travel. It worked well for them, she let him stay home and he let her travel. Boy did she travel, to California, New York, Hawaii, the Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Canada and any place in between. Lavonia and Harding shared a deep love for the Lord and for each other. Harding passed away in 2012 and she missed him, but knew she would one day be with him on the other side.
In Dallas she worked at Martin Foods for over twenty years as a cook. She also worked for the Prejean family where she met three adorable children, whom she loved dearly.
Family, fishing, and gardening were her passions. She loved family get-togethers and family road trips.
She leaves to cherish her memory nephews, Noble Harris, Jr. (Cheryl), Ronald Harris, nieces, Wanda McKnight (Florida), Sharon Cornelius (Sidney), grandnieces Linda Buckner, LaCarla Williams, Marilyn Ross and Natalie Figueroa. She also leaves sisters-in-law Gladys Harris, Minnie P. Calvin, brother-in-law W.L. Grant (Verletha) and many dear friends.
Things Lavonia taught her nephews and nieces:
How to bait a hook and how to fish. That love is like a butterfly, if you chase it you will never catch it.
How to skip stones on a pond. How to jump waves in the ocean. To always respect others and be kind.
To support your church with your time and money. To the girls she always said, “put on lipstick it helps.”
