JOHN LELAND COURTNEY born October 1, 1928, in Seminole, Oklahoma went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus on July 4, 2017 at Hospice of East Texas in Tyler, TX
Proceeded in death by his father James Virgil Courtney, mother Essie (Pete) Courtney, brother James V. Courtney, Jr., daughters Patricia Courtney and Marcella Courtney, and granddaughter Marcella Messerschmidt.
John was a wonderful loving husband, father, and grandfather who spent much of his life in the service of others as a mediator for the United Steel Workers Union and as a Federal Mediator for the United States Federal Mediation Commission. He also served briefly in the US Air Force. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Sophia Mae Courtney of Tyler, TX, his brother Bill N. Courtney and wife Frankie Courtney of Baton Rouge, LA, his sisters Ilene Hurley and husband Rev. E.R. Hurley of Baton Rouge, LA, JoAnn Grimmer and husband Charles Tim Grimmer of Baton Rouge, LA, and daughter Wendy Walkoe and husband Paul Walkoe of Vista, CA. His step children of 54 years, step-daughter Linda Vass and husband Donald Vass of Tyler, TX, step-daughter Debbie Ezzell and husband Larry Ezzell of Tyler, TX, step-daughter Sandy Dexheimer and husband Steve Dexheimer of Tyler, TX, and step-son Gary Holt and wife Lisa Holt of Trophy Club, TX., along with various nieces and nephews. He leaves a legacy of 15 wonderful grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren who knew and loved him as "PeePaw".
Services will be at Beaty Funeral Home Chapel located at 5396 State Hwy. 37, Mineola, TX on Saturday July 8th, 2017 at 11:00am. Viewing will be held one hour before the service.
The family requests any donations be sent to Hospice of East Texas in memory of his passing.
